When a virus or bacteria invades our bodies, the body fights it to prevent illnesses. This results in inflammation. Inflammation is our body’s mechanism to recognize and remove harmful substances to begin healing. Inflammation manifests as redness, swelling or pain in the affected area.
Many natural remedies prevail in the society to counter and prevent inflammation, including fish oil, several enzymes, anti-oxidants, vitamin C supplements, etc. However, shown from different researches, CBD is known to be more effective than these remedies in managing inflammation.
Cannabinoids In The Cannabis Plant
The cannabis sativa plant is enriched with over a hundred cannabinoids. Out of these, the most popular are CBD and THC.
CBD or cannabidiol is a non-psychoactive cannabinoid found in cannabis. When administered, it interacts with the body’s natural cannabinoid receptors found in the brain and immune system and can produce beneficial effects.
On the other hand, THC or Tetrahydrocannabinol is a psychoactive compound and is widely known for its intoxicating abilities. THC interacts with the body in such a way that it induces cravings of extreme hunger, reduces aggression and alters the senses.
Working Of CBD In The Human Body
The Endocannabinoid system in the human body controls various processes from immune response to sleep and memory, etc. This system contains two cannabinoid receptors namely: CB1 ad CB2. The CB1 receptor is found in the brain, while CB2 is part of the immune system.
Both these receptors are influenced by endogenous and plant-derived cannabinoids, like CBD. CBD blends well with the body’s cannabinoid receptors and influences it in such a way to produce therapeutic effects.
Effects On Inflammation
Upon administration, CBD can evoke various immune responses by interacting with the receptors in our immune system. In this regard, CBD can work with the immune system to fight inflammation.
Cytokines are proteins that are stimulated by the immune system. They control the resolution and initiation of inflammation. One of the processes involving CBD for inflammation control involves inhibiting the production of these cytokines through cells called ‘T-helper’. Moreover, CBD can also reduce interleukin-6 in the body, which is an inflammatory compound.
In a study, researchers tested CBD’s effects on four controlling molecules that are linked with inflammation of the intestines. The study concludes:
- iNOS—Inducible Nitric Oxide Synthase—can aggravate the symptoms of colitis. CBD administration reduced the activity of iNOS and resulted in improvement in Irritable Bowel Disease (IBD).
- Interleukin-1β can increase in colitis and cause intestinal injuries. The administration of CBD reduced Interleukin-1β levels and inflammation in the intestines.
